Mauritius in April: weather, sea, festivals and tips
April is one of the best compromises of the year: the sea is still at 28 °C, the heat becomes easier to bear and rain drops sharply on the west and north coasts. Cyclone season is drawing to a close, even if it officially runs to 30 April. Here is the weather by coast from our 2011-2025 averages (ERA5 reanalysis), what is worth doing this month, the April 2027 festivals and our verdict.
Average weather: April
| Area | High | Low | Rain | Gusts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North (Grand Baie) | 28 °C | 24 °C | 65 mm | 27 km/h |
| West (Flic en Flac) | 29 °C | 24 °C | 55 mm | 26 km/h |
| East (Belle Mare) | 27 °C | 24 °C | 138 mm | 25 km/h |
| Central plateau | 25 °C | 21 °C | +++ | 23 km/h |
Sea: 28 °C
2011-2025 averages (ERA5 reanalysis via Open-Meteo). The central plateau (Curepipe, Black River Gorges) is much wetter than the model shows.
April weather, coast by coast
Our 2011-2025 averages give about 29 °C by day and 24 °C at night on the west coast, 28 °C and 24 °C in the north, and 27 °C and 24 °C in the east. The central plateau (Curepipe, Black River Gorges) drops to about 25 °C by day and just over 20 °C at night, with clearly wetter weather.
Rain falls off sharply: about 55 mm on the west coast and 65 mm in the north, roughly half of March's totals. The east is still much wetter, around 140 mm, as it faces the trade winds.
The sea and the end of cyclone season
The sea stays around 28 °C: the last month at this temperature before the winter dip. Visibility is good for diving and snorkelling at Trou aux Biches or Blue Bay. Cyclone season in the south-west Indian Ocean officially ends on 30 April (15 May for Mauritius); the risk is low in April, but not zero.
What's best in April
Beaches and reefs: Trou aux Biches and its dive sites, the Blue Bay marine park, Île aux Aigrettes and its nature reserve, the catamaran to Île aux Cerfs. In the west, Flic en Flac and Le Morne beach, then the dolphin trip from Tamarin. The waterfalls are still well fed after summer: Chamarel Waterfall, Tamarind Falls. Milder temperatures also make the first hikes pleasant, early in the morning.
April 2027 festivals
Wednesday 7 April 2027 is Ougadi, the Telugu New Year and the only public holiday of the month. Easter falls on 28 March that year, so before April.
Where to stay in April
The north (Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches) and the west (Flic en Flac, Tamarin, Le Morne) are the driest bases in April, with calm beaches and plenty of excursion departures. The south-east (Blue Bay, Mahébourg) suits those who want to dive and visit Île aux Aigrettes, but it is more exposed to the trade winds and showers. In the east, Belle Mare has long breezy beaches, with more rain.
Our tips and verdict
Easter and spring school holidays in Europe (3 April to 3 May 2027 in France, depending on the zone) bring more families, so book early. Pack sunscreen, a hat and a light rain layer, especially if you stay in the east or visit the plateau.
Verdict: one of the best months for a beach week, with a still-warm sea, less rain in the west and north, and cyclone risk at the tail end of the season.
