The west coast's big beach
At around 8 km according to the Mauritius tourism board, Flic en Flac is one of the island's longest beaches. It runs along a reef-sheltered lagoon, shaded by casuarina trees, below the mountains of Black River Gorges National Park.
The name is thought to come from the Dutch "Fried Landt Flaak", meaning free, flat land, a reminder of the early Dutch settlers. The former fishing village is now the island's second resort area after Grand Baie, with hotels, restaurants and holiday flats, yet it keeps a relaxed local feel at weekends.
Swimming, snorkelling and diving
The lagoon is shallow and usually calm, which makes it a good family beach. With a mask you can explore the coral patches inside the lagoon; water shoes protect against sea urchins and broken coral. Stay inside the lagoon and keep away from the reef passes, where currents can be strong.
Beyond the reef, Flic en Flac is one of the island's diving hubs, with well-known sites such as Snake Reef and the Cathedral reachable with local dive centres. For a first dive, pick a certified operator.
Getting there and practicalities
The public beach is free, with many access points along the coast road (checked October 2026). By car, allow about 30 to 45 minutes from Port Louis, 1 to 1.25 hours from Grand Baie and just over an hour from the airport. Regular buses serve the village.
Parking is along the road and in car parks near the beach, which fill up quickly at weekends.
When to go
On weekday mornings the beach is nearly empty and the water at its clearest. At weekends, and especially Sundays, Mauritian families gather under the trees with picnics and music: lively and friendly, but noisier.
Facing due west, the beach has great sunsets all year. Sheltered from the trade winds, the west coast is often drier and sunnier than the east in the southern winter. Towards evening, food trucks and roti, dholl puri and chilli-fritter vendors park up along the beach.
