Mauritian tea from field to cup
Domaine de Bois Chéri is one of the island's oldest tea estates, with its first plantings dating from 1892. It sits on the southern uplands at almost 500 m above sea level and is one of the few tea factories still working in Mauritius.
The tour follows the leaf: through the tea fields, into the factory where it is withered, rolled and dried, and on to a small museum on the history of tea and its machinery. It ends at Le Chalet, above the estate's lake, with a tasting of the brand's plain and flavoured teas, including the famous vanilla tea.

The visit with tasting (factory, museum and tasting) costs Rs 750 per person; the visit, tasting and lunch package at the estate restaurant rises to Rs 2,100 per person from 1 November 2026 (until 31 October, the price shown on the restaurant booking form applies). Seeing the factory at work
Processing depends on the harvest and mostly happens in the morning. In the southern winter (roughly May to October) production slows and the factory may only run on certain days, so if seeing the machines matters to you, call the day before.
For a deeper dive, the Zistwar Dité experience adds breakfast, a tea-plucking session with the pickers, the tour and lunch. It must be booked 48 hours ahead and runs Monday to Saturday only.
Getting there and tips
Bois Chéri is in the Savanne district, on the road between Grand Bassin and the south coast. Allow about an hour from Port Louis or Flic en Flac and 1.5 hours from Grand Baie; a hire car or a day taxi is practically essential.
It is cooler than on the coast, so bring a light jumper, especially in winter. Plan 1.5 to 2 hours on site. On a clear day the view from Le Chalet and the restaurant stretches over the tea fields to the south coast.
