L'Aventure du Sucre Museum
In the old Beau Plan sugar mill, this modern museum tells 250 years of Mauritian history through sugar cane, slavery and indenture. Special-sugar and rum tasting at the end.

A sugar museum rebuilt for 2026
Housed in the former Beau Plan sugar factory in Pamplemousses, L'Aventure du Sucre unveiled a completely redesigned visitor trail on 25 March 2026, after more than two years of work. Open since 2002, the museum welcomes over 100,000 visitors a year.
The new permanent exhibition covers around 5,000 m² in nine sections, from the volcanic birth of the island to today's cane industry. Monumental machines, giant screens, animated models and soundscapes now do much of the storytelling that used to sit on text panels.
What the visit covers
Sugar cane is still the thread, but the story goes well beyond machinery: slavery, indentured labour, the making of Mauritian society and everyday life around the mills. Two spaces are new. "L'Énergie de la Canne" shows how cane biomass feeds the country's energy transition, and a New Grove Distillery space explains rum-making through interactive displays.
The visit ends at the Village Boutik with a guided tasting of unrefined Mauritian sugars and New Grove rums. On Wednesday mornings there is also a hands-on cane-cutting experience.
Tickets and opening hours
The museum opens Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and is closed on Sundays. A non-resident adult ticket costs Rs 1,200; children aged 6 to 13, teenagers aged 13 to 18 and students with ID pay Rs 600, and under-6s go free (checked in October 2026). Mauritian residents get lower rates.
Prices rose significantly with the new trail, so check the official website before you go, along with the year-end closing days.
Getting there and planning your time
It is about 20 minutes by car from both Port Louis and Grand Baie, and just a few minutes from Pamplemousses Garden. Arrive by early afternoon at the latest: the nine sections need at least 90 minutes, more with the tasting.
Everything is indoors, which makes it a solid rainy-day choice. For lunch, Le Fangourin restaurant in the Beau Plan gardens opens Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4:30pm, with desserts built around the estate's special sugars. Booking ahead for lunch is wise.
