A history-laden former port capital, facing the bay of the 1810 Battle of Grand Port. Its national history museum, waterfront and Monday market make it the south-east's most endearing town.

A historic town on the bay
Mahébourg was founded in 1805 by Governor Decaen, who laid out its grid of streets and named it after Mahé de La Bourdonnais, the 18th-century governor of what was then Isle de France. It faces the wide, reef-sheltered bay of the south-east.
That bay was the scene of the Battle of Grand Port, fought from 20 to 27 August 1810. A British squadron ran aground in the narrow channels and was beaten by French frigates, the Royal Navy's worst defeat of the Napoleonic Wars and the only naval victory engraved on the Arc de Triomphe. The British still took the island a few months later.
What to do today
The waterfront is where locals stroll in the evening: benches, fishermen, colourful pirogues and views over Ile aux Aigrettes and the Grand Port mountains. Street vendors sell gâteaux piments (chilli fritters), dholl puri and samosas along the quay.
The covered market near the bus station opens every morning. On Mondays it spills into the streets for the big weekly fair: fruit and vegetables, spices, fabrics, clothes, kitchenware and snacks. Come in the morning for the liveliest atmosphere.
National History Museum: closed
Housed in a late 18th-century colonial mansion listed as national heritage, the museum normally displays an almost complete dodo skeleton, old maps and relics of the Battle of Grand Port, with free entry.
It has been closed since 15 December 2025 because of a badly damaged roof. It was still closed in July 2026, when the 2026-27 budget set aside Rs 100 million for a full rehabilitation, with no reopening date announced. Check the Mauritius Museums Council website before you go.
Getting there and practicalities
Mahébourg is about 15 minutes from the airport, roughly an hour's drive from Port Louis and 1h15 to 1h30 from Grand Baie or Flic en Flac. The central bus station is a south-east hub, with buses to Blue Bay among others.
Wandering the town costs nothing. Parking near the waterfront fills up fast on Mondays, so arrive early that day.
