Mauritius's only leisure submarine
Since 1998 Blue Safari has run the island's only leisure submarine off Trou aux Biches. The 10-seat craft, plus pilot, dives to 35 m, far deeper than anything you will see snorkelling.
You stay dry at normal air pressure, seated in front of large portholes. The submarine glides along the reef among shoals of fish, then stops at the Star Hope, a former trawler scuttled to form an artificial reef, and at a 17th-century anchor.
How the trip works
Check-in and briefing take place at the Blue Safari desk in Trou aux Biches, followed by a boat transfer to the platform where the submarine waits. The dive itself lasts 40 minutes and the whole outing about two hours.
Departures run hourly from 8:30am to 4:30pm in summer and until 3:30pm in winter. Blue Safari also offers the subscooter, a small underwater scooter you drive yourself at shallow depth with your head in an air bubble.

Who is it for?
It is the easiest way for non-swimmers, young children and older travellers to see the seabed. It is not recommended for people with heart conditions or severe claustrophobia, and it is cramped for anyone over 2 m tall.
Visibility is best in calm, sunny conditions, and dives may be postponed in bad weather.
Getting there
The Blue Safari desk is in Trou aux Biches on the north-west coast. By car it is about 15 minutes from Grand Baie, 30 to 40 minutes from Port Louis and an hour or a little more from Flic en Flac. Buses on the coast road between Port Louis and Grand Baie stop at Trou aux Biches.
Arrive a little before your briefing time. No swimwear needed: you dive fully dressed, and the cabin air is continuously topped up with medical oxygen.
