What a typical day looks like
Most catamarans leave Grand Baie (sometimes Pereybere or Trou aux Biches) between 7:30am and 9am depending on the operator, returning around 4pm. The crossing to the islets takes about an hour; speedboats do it in 20 to 30 minutes.
Boats sail past Gunner's Quoin (Coin de Mire), a volcanic cliff where seabirds nest, then anchor off Gabriel Island and Flat Island. Expect snorkelling in the shallow lagoon, free time on the beach and a barbecue lunch on board.
Protected islets: what is allowed
Gunner's Quoin, Round Island and Serpent Island are nature reserves closed to the public: you sail around them without landing. Gabriel Island and Flat Island are also reserves, but visitors may use designated beach areas.
Since 2015, bringing food onto Gabriel Island and Flat Island has been banned to keep rats and other invasive species out, which is why barbecues happen on board. A new management plan was being drawn up in 2026 and may add restrictions, so follow the crew's instructions.
Prices and booking
Based on operators' published offers, a day on a shared catamaran usually costs Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000 per adult, often including lunch and drinks on board, with hotel transfers sometimes extra (checked in October 2026). A private speedboat costs much more but can be split within a group.
Before booking, ask what is included: transfers, mask and fins, drinks and how many passengers are on board. Booking a few days ahead is usually enough outside school holidays.
When to go and practical tips
The north is dry and sunny for much of the year. In June and July the trade winds blow harder and the crossing can be choppy; from December to March trips are cancelled during cyclone alerts. The water is warmest from January to April.
Pack reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, a UV top for snorkelling and a seasickness tablet if you are prone to it. Children should wear life jackets at sea; tell the crew about any weaker swimmers.
